13sein auch der (Archon) Basileus und der Hierophant und der Dadouchos
14und die Kerykes und Eumolpiden und von den übrigen Athenern wer
15will, damit sie auf gottesfürchtigste und gerechteste Weise die Grenzsteine
16setzen. Sorge sollen tragen für die heilige Au und die anderen
17Heiligtümer in Athen vom heutigen Tage an bis auf
18alle Zeit diejenigen, die das jeweils sie betreffende Gesetz damit beauftragt, und
19der Rat vom Areiopag und der General, der für den
20Schutz des Landes gewählt ist, und die Peripol-
21archen und die Demarchen und der jeweils amtierende
22Rat und von den übrigen Athenern jeder, der will, auf die Art, wie
23sie es vermögen. Schreiben soll der Sekretär des Rates auf zwei
24völlig gleiche Zinntäfelchen, auf das eine: „Ob es günstiger und vorteil-
25hafter ist für das Volk der Athener, dass der (Archon) Basileus verpachte die der-
26zeit in Bearbeitung befindlichen Teile der heiligen Au außerhalb der Grenzsteine zum
27Bau der Säulenhalle und zur Instandsetzung des Heiligtums der beiden
28Göttinnen?“; auf das andere Zinntäfelchen: „Ob es günstiger und vorteilhafter ist
29für das Volk der Athener, die derzeit ausserhalb der Grenzsteine in Bearbeitung
30befindlichen Teile der heiligen Au brach liegen zu lassen für die beiden Göttinnen?“ Sobald der
31Sekretär geschrieben hat, soll der Vorsitzende aus den Reihen der Prohedroi nehmen und
32aufrollen jedes der beiden Zinntäfelchen und mit Wollfäden umwickeln und in
33eine bronzene Hydria werfen in Gegenwart des Volkes; vorbereiten sollen
34das die Prytanen; die Schatzmeister der Göttin sollen hinein-
35bringen eine goldene Hydria und eine silberne alsbald in die Volk(sversammlung);
36der Vorsitzende soll die bronzene Hydria schütteln und die beiden
37Zinntäfelchen der Reihe nach herausnehmen und das erste in
38die goldene Hydria legen, das zweite in die silberne,
39und sie zubinden. Der Vorsitzende der Prytanen soll sie ver-
40siegeln mit dem öffentlichen Siegel, daneben kann siegeln auch von den
41übrigen Athenern jeder, der will. Sobald sie versiegelt haben,
42sollen die Schatzmeister die Hydrien auf die Akropolis tragen. Wählen soll
43das Volk drei Männer, einen aus dem Rat, zwei aus allen
44Athenern, die nach Delphi reisen und den Gott be-
45fragen, gemäss welcher der beiden Schriften die Athener verfahren sollen
46mit der heiligen Au, ob gemäss der aus der goldenen Hydria oder der aus
47der silbernen. Sobald sie aber zurückkehren vom Gott, sollen sie herunter-
48tragen die Hydrien, und verlesen werden sollen dem Volk der Orakelspruch und die
49Schriften von den Zinntäfelchen; welche der beiden Schriften der
50Gott bezeichnet hat, dass sie günstiger und vorteilhafter für das Volk der Athener ist,
51dieser gemäss soll verfahren werden, damit es aufs gottesfürchtigste geschehe gegenüber
52den beiden Göttinnen und niemals in den künftigen Zeit ein Frevel geschehe
53hinsichtlich der heiligen Au und hinsichtlich der anderen Heiligtümer in
54Athen. Jetzt aber soll aufzeichnen diesen Volksbeschluss und den früheren
55des Philokrates über die Heiligtümer der Sekretär des Rates auf
56zwei steinerne Stelen und sie aufstellen, die eine in Eleusis beim
57Propylon des Heiligtums, die andere im Eleusinion in der Stadt.
58Opfern sollen ein günstig stimmendes Opfer den beiden Göttinnen der Hierophant und die
59Priesterin der Demeter; - - - der Schatzmeister des Volkes
60- - - Drachmen. Geben soll er ferner für die Aufzeichnung
61- - - Drachmen für jede der beiden (Stelen) aus dem Dekret-Fonds
62des Volkes. Geben soll er ferner von den Gewählten
63nach Delphi einem jeden - - Drachmen als Reisegeld. Geben soll er auch
64den Gewählten für die heilige Au 5 Drachmen einem
65jeden aus dem Dekret-Fonds des Volkes.
66Bereitstellen sollen marmorne Grenzsteine, so viele wie nötig, die Poleten,
67- - - Rat - - - Verdingung; die Vorsitzenden
68- - - sollen schriftlich festlegen, wie sie gearbeitet
69werden - - - und aufgestellt werden sollen (auf) der heiligen Au,

22and any other Athenian who wishes, in whatever way
23they know how; and the secretary of the Council shall write on two
24pieces of tin, equal and alike, on the one, if it is preferable and better
25for the Athenian People that the king lets out the
26area of the sacred tract which is now being worked [out]side (or [in]side ?) the markers
27for building the portico and repair of the sanctuary of the two goddesses;
28and on the other piece of tin, if it is preferable and better for the Athenian People
29to leave the area of the sacred tract which is now being worked [out]side (or [in]side ?) the markers
30fallow for the two goddesses; and when the secretary
31has written, the chairman of the presiding committee shall take
32each of the two pieces of tin and roll them up and tie them with wool
33and put them into a bronze water jug in the presence of the People;
34and the prytany shall prepare these things; and the treasurers of the goddess
35shall bring down a gold and a silver water-jug straightaway to the People;
36and the chairman shall shake the bronze water-jug and take out
37each piece of tin in turn, and shall put the first piece of tin
38into the gold water-jug and the second into the silver one
39and bind them fast; and the prytany chairman shall seal them
40with the public seal and any other Athenian who wishes
41shall counterseal them; and when they have been sealed,
42the treasurers shall take the water-jugs up to the acropolis;
43and the People shall elect three men, one from the Council, two from
44all the other Athenians, to go to Delphi and enquire of the god,
45according to which of the writings the Athenians are to act
46concerning the sacred tract, whether those from the gold water-jug or those from
47the silver one; and when they have come back from the god, they shall break open
48the water jugs, and the oracle and the writings on the pieces of tin
49shall be read to the People; and according to whichever of the writings the
50god ordains it to be preferable and best for the Athenian People,
51according to those they are to act, so that matters relating to the two goddesses
52shall be handled as piously as possible and never in future shall anything impious
53happen concerning the sacred tract or the other sacred places at
54Athens; and the secretary of the Council shall [now] inscribe this decree
55and the previous one of Philokrates [about the sacred places] on
56two stone stelai and stand one at Eleusis by the
57[gateway of the sanctuary], the other in the Eleusinion in the city;
58and the hierophant and the priestess of Demeter shall also sacrifice [a propitiatory sacrifice] to the two goddesses - - -
